Signing Day for Garnet Valley’s Finest Athletes

By: Kayla Nadot

On Wednesday November 14, students from all high schools signed their letters of intent to play collegiate level sports at the college where they are committed. Every year, signing day is a nationally held event in which committed collegiate athletes sign their letter of intent to said school.

This is an emotional day for players, parents, coaches, and friends due to years of hard work finally paying off.

“It’s crazy to think that after years of playing soccer, I’m officially going to be attending Duke to play D1 soccer. I never thought that my dream would become a reality and am so excited to begin my soccer collegiate career,” stated committed, now signed, athlete Julia Burnell.

Over a hundred people eager to watch athletes sign their letters packed the library for the special event. 36 athletes would be signing that Wednesday and beginning their athletic collegiate career.

“Seeing all of my family members, friends, and coaches was the best part of the day for me,” says athlete Madi Mckee, who will be attending La Salle University to play D1 lacrosse, “without their love and support this scholarship would not have been possible and being able to seal the deal in front of them all made all the practices worth it.”

A variety of sports were represented from volleyball, to soccer, to lacrosse. Many athletes were attending different schools with a few overlapping such as both Regan and Kara Nealon attending Penn State University to continue their lacrosse career.

“It’s a special moment for all the athletes, and for the parents too. It was so heartwarming to see Julia sign her letter, I always knew she was destined for great things and today just made it official,” stated Krista Burnell, Julia Burnell’s mom.

As the tradition of signing day will continue on year after year, the crowd that fills the library is thrilled to see which students will be heading off to different universities to continue to play the sport they love.
